The Siberian cat originated in the forests of Russia. It was a popular pet among Russian nomads and an excellent mouser. This breed is often described as magical in Russian literature and folktales. It is believed to have existed for over a thousand years. The breed was officially recognized by international organizations in 1997.

A true cat-dog, the Siberian will greet you at your front door. You can even take it on vacation, as it adapts very well to walks on a harness and leash. It's a cat that can be trained because it understands its owners' intentions. Naturally sociable with children, adults, and other animals, it can live in a house or apartment. It's an affectionate, playful cat that needs daily attention to thrive, as it hates being alone. If given the chance, it's an excellent hunter. To further enhance its happiness, a cat tree (purchased or homemade) or an exercise course (small shelves fixed at different heights on a wall, for example) will bring it great joy, as it's a cat that loves to exercise and appreciates being in a dominant position.
